You’ve just opened your first-ever Instagram account. Not for selfies or scrolling through celebrity updates, but for something more experimental: promoting a product as part of your A2 Media Studies project. That’s me right now; fresh to Instagram, figuring out how social media can actually shape audience perception and how to promote a product through Instagram, as a practice for my A2 short film coursework.

I decided to promote a random product just to see how it works. The product? A bunch of friendship bracelets I made. Why? It's cute, in trend and easy to photograph. Most importantly, it was in my house.

Step 01:  Setting up my account

I kept it personal, not a business page. I wanted to understand how everyday users interact with audiences, not influencers or brands. I used my real name.

Step 02: Creating the post

I took a photo of the bracelet and edited it with Instagram's built-in filter 'Juno' to make the colours pop.
I added a caption that said:

Step 03: Hashtags and Engagement

I used a bunch of hashtags to test research:
  • #handmadebracelets
  • # aestheticaccessories
  • #beadedbracelets
  • #supportsmallbusiness
  • #studentcontent
  • #mediastudies

What I Learned 🎓

  • Presentation matters: A clean, bright photo stands out, even for a simple item.
  • Captions create connection: Making the post personal helped me seem more relatable.
  • Instagram isn’t just scrolling, it's a form of media construction.
