While researching film posters, I came across the poster for Her. This poster stood out to me because of its extremely minimal design. Unlike many sci-fi film posters that focus on technology or futuristic imagery, this poster focuses almost entirely on the emotional state of the main character. By analysing the poster, I was able to understand how simplicity and colour can communicate meaning.
Visual Composition
The poster features a close-up image of Theodore, the main character played by Joaquin Phoenix. His face takes up most of the poster, and he is placed directly in the center of the frame.
This creates a strong focal point, making the viewer immediately focus on the character’s facial expression. His expression appears thoughtful, which suggests that the film may explore an emotional theme.
The close framing also creates a feeling of intimacy, almost as if the audience is being invited into the character’s personal thoughts.
Colour Choices
One of the most striking aspects of this poster is the bright red background.
Red can symbolise several emotions such as:
- Love
- Passion
- Intensity
- Desire
This colour choice is interesting because the film itself revolves around a romantic relationship between a human and an AI system. The red background therefore visually reinforces the theme of love and emotional connection.
The contrast between the red background and the softer tones of the character’s face helps the image stand out and immediately attract attention.
Typography
The title of the film is written in a simple white font. The typography is clean and minimal, which matches the overall design of the poster.
Instead of using complex fonts or effects, the designers kept the text understated so that the focus remains on the character and the emotion conveyed through the image.
What I Learned From This Poster
From analysing this poster, I learned that a powerful design does not need to be complicated. Sometimes focusing on a single element, such as a character’s expression, can communicate the emotional tone of a film more effectively than showing many different elements.
This poster also taught me how colour can subtly influence how audiences interpret a film before even watching it.
