Another poster I researched was from the science fiction film I Am Mother. This poster immediately stood out because of its strong visual concept and symbolism. Unlike the Her poster, which focuses on emotion, this poster focuses more on the relationship between technology and humanity.
Visual Composition
The central image in the poster shows a robot holding a human baby. This creates a very striking and unusual visual because robots are typically associated with machinery rather than caregiving.
By placing the robot in a nurturing position, the poster immediately raises questions about the story. It makes the viewer wonder:
- Why is the robot raising a human child?
- What happened to humanity?
- Can machines replace human parents?
Lighting and Atmosphere
The poster uses dark lighting and shadows, which creates a mysterious atmosphere. The lighting also highlights the robot’s metallic surface, making it look powerful and slightly intimidating.
At the same time, the baby represents innocence and vulnerability. This contrast between the robot and the baby creates a sense of tension and curiosity.
Symbolism
The robot holding the child symbolises the film’s exploration of artificial intelligence, survival, and the future of humanity.
Without reading anything about the film, audiences can already guess that the story may involve:
- A post-apocalyptic world
- Artificial intelligence raising humans
- Ethical questions about technology
This shows how a poster can communicate complex themes through symbolism.
What I Learned From This Poster
From analysing this poster, I learned that a single powerful image can communicate an entire concept. The poster does not need many details because the main visual already tells the audience what type of story they might expect.
It also taught me how contrast between elements (human vs machine) can make a design more visually interesting.
