Today, I designed the official casting call poster for my short film, and this step made the project suddenly feel real. Making the poster was more than a design exercise, it was my first move toward finding the right actors who can bring my characters to life.
Designing the Poster: My Creative Process
1. Choosing the Visual Style
Since my short film explores the relationship between a human girl and a hologram boy, I wanted the poster to immediately communicate:
- Technology
- Emotion
- Mystery
- Slight tension between reality and illusion
That’s why I used:
- A dark futuristic background
- Soft neon blue light (to hint at holograms)
- Minimalist typography
- A clean studio-style character layout
The colour palette matches my film’s overall aesthetic from the moodboard: cool, modern, and slightly melancholic.
2. Featuring the Characters
Even though casting hasn’t begun, I used silhouettes and placeholders to show the two-character dynamic. This allows potential actors to visualize:
- The type of role
- The tone of the film
- The emotional atmosphere
It also keeps the mystery of the AI twist intact.
Why This Poster Matters
Creating the poster was a key part of my planning and development because:
- It allowed me to define my film visually
- It helped me organise the casting process
- It made the project feel official
Posters are often the first impression of a film. By designing mine early, I now have a strong visual identity for my short film before even stepping onto set.
